Sector insights on emissions reduction and business drivers for abatement

09:00     Taking an innovative approach to better energy management to unlock potential improvements in output and productivity

  • Energy efficiency makes good business sense - reducing costs, improving productivity, lowering carbon emissions and boosting the bottom line
  • The role of good energy management as part of a smart and sustainable business approach
  • Investing in energy efficiency improvements and benchmarking new operations against these to mine the potential to make significant energy savings and emissions reduction

John Newton, General Manager Sustainability and Environment, Orora

09:30     Identifying, scoping and analysing the cost and pathways for abatement in the water utilities sector

  • Integrating analysis of cost and efficient methods of abatement to drive emissions targets and cost efficiencies for business
  • Implementing an evidence based and realistic emission reduction strategy that is cost effective, risk-based and technologically innovative
  • Examining some of the emerging techniques and technologies for abatement

Phil Woods, Principal Analyst – Eco Efficiency, Sydney Water

10:00     The road to voluntary leadership in emissions reduction and carbon neutrality

Transforce is the only carbon neutral transport company in Australia. This session will look at how they have innovated to reduce emissions in a traditionally high emissions sector.

  • Monitoring, measuring and managing the organisation’s carbon footprint and direct and indirect emissions
  • Implementing the carbon neutrality through sustained organisational and operational change
  • How Transforce is reducing emissions from air, energy, water, waste and residue through technological innovation and fuel efficiency

Steve Fieldus, Managing Director, Transforce

10:30     Morning tea

Building informed policy to progress climate action

11:00     Driving abatement through stable policy and long term commitment to climate action

  • Assessing the current directions for policy, the market mechanisms for emissions reduction and the Australian commitment to global climate change action
  • Understanding the unique challenges and opportunities Australia faces in curbing carbon pollution, and high emissions intensity
  • Strengthening policy and strategy to improve Australia's performance in energy productivity

Sharon Claydon MP, Secretary ALP Caucus Sustainable Australia Committee, Federal Opposition

Analysing the impact of climate change on investment and finance decisions

11:30     Building a framework to support the financing of climate initiatives globally

  • Examining the emergence of climate-related financial products and market-based solutions to mobilize private capital for low-carbon investments in emerging markets
  • Building capacity for countries wanting to put a price on carbon, and thought leadership on the next generation of carbon markets
  • Assessing financial products and services for climate-related projects (carbon markets, sustainable energy, and clean tech) in emerging markets

Ben Stuart, Director of Carbon Strategy, Carbon Trade Exchange

Assessing the regulatory landscape for energy markets and GHG abatement

12:00     Assessing the regulatory evolution for climate change and abatement in the context of energy markets

  • Reviewing the evolution of conventional energy production and the linkages to climate change
  • Examining the emergent regulatory frameworks for unconventional gas in the eastern market and their impact on Australia’s GHG abatement strategies
  • Using regulatory tools to promote GHG abatement within emerging energy markets

Samantha Hepburn, Research Director, Deakin Law School

12:30     Networking lunch

Innovative state and council action on abatement and adaptation

13:30     Focus Session: State and City Council overviews on abatement and emissions reduction strategy and action

(Three speakers will present for 15 minutes each. This is followed by a discussion moderated by the session chair)

Focus 1 - How Northern Australian systems will contribute to the national carbon economy

  • Considering the carbon abatement issues and how they touch multiple dimensions of economic activity, sustainability and livelihood opportunity for Northern Australia
  • Building the knowledge and technologies and methodologies in the context of the variable climates and diverse landscapes of northern Australia.
  • Engagement and participation of Northern Indigenous communities and Traditional Owners in carbon industry

Rowan Foley, General Manager, Aboriginal Carbon Fund

Focus 2 - Collaborative approach between state government and regional and local agencies to manage climate risk and build community capacity for abatement and adaptation

  • Integrating climate risk strategies into policy settings and existing risk management strategies
  • Developing and implementing a suite of key strategies that will build resilience enable adaptation and drive abatement
  • Strengthening partnerships, collaboration and development of accessible research and strategies with local government and communities

Mark Wakeham, Chief Executive Officer, Environment Victoria

Focus 3 - Council action to take international leadership in emissions reduction and adaptation

  • Committing to an emissions reduction target beyond agreed national limits and the task of developing and implementing policy
  • Partnership between state and city councils – examining Adelaide city’s commitment to carbon neutrality and how this is to be achieved
  • The Compacts of States and Regions and the Compacts of Mayors

Martin Haese, Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Adelaide City Council

Showcasing world leading carbon abatement project implementation

14:30     Demonstrating and deploying technology and application of carbon capture for at a commercial scale

  • Examining the suitability of oxyfuel technology for both new build and existing coal-fired power stations
  • Building effective cross sector collaborations for comprehensive project coverage to optimise the technology and share knowledge
  • Progressing the commercialisation and deployment of oxyfuel combustion with carbon capture
  • Advancing the understanding of CO2 transport and storage to encourage a broader take up by industry

Jim Craigen, Deputy Director Technology, ACALET Callide Oxyfuel Project

15:00     Afternoon tea

15:30     Developing Australia’s first carbon dioxide geological storage demonstration site

  • A project overview: Injecting CO2 and storing it in a depleted gas reservoir deep underground and further injections into different formations are being planned; and
  • Establishing continuous monitoring for the design and program KPIs for comprehensive understanding of viability and gaps in process or technology
  • Influencing regulation at a time when no single regulatory framework existed for CCS

Matthias Raab, Chief Operating Officer, CO2CRC

Examining the implications of carbon abatement for regional development

16:00     The commercial opportunities and spatial priorities for biodiverse carbon forests and investment in land management and abatement for regional development

  • Drivers for land-use changes globally and how these resonate with Australian regional and rural geography and economy
  • Farmers as innovators in carbon abatement and land management and the impact on national emissions reduction outcomes
  • Partnership with regional development agencies and councils in enabling forest and agricultural abatement to boost economic sustainability and extend market advantage for the two sectors
