Paul Balfe

Paul Balfe is an Executive Director of ACIL Tasman. He has worked for 35 years in the Australian energy and resources sectors, and has overall responsibility for ACIL Tasman’s gas business. He has lead the development and commercialisation of ACIL Tasman’s detailed gas market models and their application to strategic and policy analysis throughout Australia and internationally.
Prior to joining ACIL Tasman, Mr Balfe held a number of senior executive positions in the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy. He has advised government and corporate sector clients on matters relating to the coal, oil and gas industries, coal seam gas, oil shale, mining safety and health, environmental management and alternative and renewable energies. With qualifications in geology and business administration, his experience ranges across both technical and commercial aspects of project evaluation and development.

Michael Batiste is the Supply Chain Manager for the Santos Gladstone Liquefied Natural Gas Project. In this role he is responsible for the logistics, material management, contracting and procurement functions to support the Project. Michael has held a variety of logistics and contracting roles within Santos prior to mobbing to the GLNG Project. Prior to joining Santos, Michael served in the Australian Army and held a range of senior logistics operations and logistics training appointments. In 2007 he managed the Australian Defence Force base logistics operations in South East Australia, including Project management of the Armoured Personnel Carrier upgrade program. In 2008 – 2009 Michael commanded the Army Logistics Training Centre, responsible for training 7000 students a year in vocational, graduate and post-graduate education in the fields of logistics, maintenance, project management and emergency medicine. Michael was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010 for services in the field of logistics. Michael holds a Bachelors degree in Science and Masters degrees in Business Administration and Strategic Studies.

Grant Christie, Vice President Operations for Talisman Australasia Pty Ltd, leads the Country Operations for Talisman’s exploration efforts in Papua New Guinea. Grant joined Talisman in 2008 where he initially led the drive to apply manufacturing techniques in Operations and Supply Chain to transition the North American division to an unconventional development business. Grant moved to his current role in 2011 where he manages the exploration country operations activity including community relations, seismic acquisition, civil site construction, drilling, logistics and supply chain. Prior to joining Talisman Grant worked for 4 years in management consulting in North America with Booz & Co (Operations & Energy practice) where he led numerous projects for North American energy companies to develop new strategies, optimize their portfolios, and apply manufacturing techniques to transition to unconventional businesses. Previously Grant worked for 14 years with Shell International where he primarily worked in their Exploration and Development division in numerous technical operational and commercial roles across various projects across the asset life cycle. Beth Gutweiler is a Supply Chain professional and has applied her talents to the energy industry since 1995. She is currently the Asia Pacific Regional Supply Chain Manager for Halliburton. In her current role she is accountable for all procurement, materials, and logistics functions across 20 countries in Asia Pacific. Beth joined Halliburton in 1995 as part of their Rotational Supply Chain Management Program. She has since held progressively larger roles in manufacturing, production planning, customer service, procurement, materials, SAP, strategic sourcing and category management. Currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia she has previously been posted in Dallas, Oklahoma, Gulf of Mexico, Houston, Holland, and Scotland. Beth has a BSc. in Industrial Engineering from Louisiana State University and is currently pursuing her Masters in Supply Chain Management from the University of Bolton UK. Beth is hugely supportive of the development of young talent mentoring several rising stars and serving on the LSU College of Engineering’s Advisory Board for Industrial Engineering.

Colby Hauser has many years of experience working in the supply chain management industry, and holds a Bachelor degree in International Business and Supply Chain Management.
Prior to joining ICN, Colby worked at the ATCO Group in Canada, preparing and evaluating tenders to meet the companies procurement needs, managing contractual agreements, and managing supplier relationships.
Colby has extensive experience, both domestically and internationally, in the oil and gas, and construction industries, primarily in supply and contract management. He is a Certified Procurement Professional, with international certifications in purchasing management and supply chain management. Colby is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Australia.
Before becoming ICN’s National Sector Manager – Oil and Gas, Colby was a Senior Consultant working with ICN on the Woodside Browse LNG Development – matching specific procurement requirements against specific supplier capabilities and promoting local industry’s capability.
Colby is committed to facilitating mutual beneficial outcomes between project proponents and suppliers. By reducing barriers in supply chains, and thereby maximising opportunities for Australian and New Zealand suppliers, value will be created for major oil and gas operators as well as local suppliers.

She is also a Fellow and lecturer with the Graduate School of Business at Curtin University. Prior to joining the resources sector she was a contracting professional in the defence, government and tertiary education sectors for nearly 20 year and has a broad range of experience. Diane has also worked in the forestry and health sectors and in the UK, Sweden and Canada.

Prior to this appointment, Bob held the University roles of Director Corporate Education, Business Manager, and General Manager and Company Secretary of QUT Enterprise Holdings Pty Ltd, the university’s holding company for commercial ventures.
Bob’s first career was in the information technology sector with global and Australian hardware, software and services companies. He commenced as a software engineer and subsequently took on a range of marketing and management roles. As General Manager he led the dynamic growth of an Australian software company that listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in February 2000.
Today his interests are in education relevant to project and program leadership, contracting, intellectual property and governance.
Richard Peasgood

.Richard Peasgood is currently a Procurement Manager at Santos in Adelaide and is responsible for Onshore Subsurface contracting. He is responsible for contracting Drilling and Exploration services in the South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales as well as procurement of Goods and Services that span multiple Business Units in Santos. Prior to joining Santos in 2008, Richard worked in the mining services sector in Australia and held a number of posts in the UK in both public and private sectors. His last role in the UK was as Head of Major Procurement at London Fire Brigade where he was also instrumental in the launch of the National Procurement Strategy for the Fire Service in England and Wales. Richard obtained a Masters of Business Administration in 2002 and became MCIPS qualified in 2004. Richard is also a committee member of the CIPSA SA / NT region.

Stuart Pickering has recently joined the department from Brisbane City Council where he was responsible for the delivery of the City Hall Restoration Project. Stuart has over 30 years experience in capital development, strategic asset management and facilities operational management across state based and national organisations. In addition to asset and capital development projects, Stuart has had extensive business management experience at executive/director level for both private and government organisations. With qualifications in architecture and commerce. Stuart has managed an extensive range of projects across retail, commercial, education, residential, health, industrial and government public buildings. He has also developed experience in the redevelopment of heritage government buildings having completed two of the most significant restoration projects in Australia being the Victorian State Library and Brisbane City Hall restoration. Currently, Stuart is the Deputy Director-General for the Major Projects Office, Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Queensland State Government. The Major Projects Division is responsible for the delivery of Queensland’s flagship projects such as the Commonwealth Games, Brisbane Precinct Project and the Gold Coast Broadwater Development.

These services provide the WA business community with vital information about developments and opportunities on projects in the resource, mining, oil & gas and many other industries. Chris had a long career as an engineer, project manager and development manager in the IT and Telecommunications Industry, specialising in the development and deployment of products and services for underserviced and emerging markets around the world.
In 2002, Chris joined CCIWA as an engineering consultant in the Industry Capability Network (ICN) and worked on many infrastructure and resource projects in WA like the Perth Convention Centre, Perth-to-Mandurah Railway, Northbridge Tunnel, Sino Iron Project and the Gorgon Project.
In 2010, Chris took over the management of ProjectConnect and REPS, where his wealth of experience in the management and development of online information management systems combined with year of experience on resource projects helped to advance the service offerings of these products to new levels.
Chris has a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Stellenbosch University in South Africa and also has a Bachelor of Commerce and Accounting degree from the University of South Africa.

Shams Rahman holds the position of Professor of Supply Chain Management and Head, Logistics and Supply Chain at RMIT University. Prior to joining RMIT, he worked at other universities in Australia, UK and Thailand. He also held visiting fellowship at the Virginia Tech and University of Exeter.
Shams is on the editorial board of ten international journals. He is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Information Systems and Supply Chain Management, a Regional Editor of the International Journal of Logistics and Supply Chain Management Systems, and a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Advances in Information Systems and Supply Chain Management (Book Series). He is also the foundation member of the International Advisory Committee of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Logistics & Supply Chain Systems.

Jody grew up in South Australia, graduating in Accounting with a career spanning 12 years in mining Commercial roles at Barrick Gold and Rio Tinto in both Gold and Uranium commodities... Jody is a keen golfer and traveller.

Liam Wagner is a Research Fellow at the University of Queensland specialising in energy and environmental economics and policy. Prior to coming to the School of Economics, Dr Wagner worked as a Trading Analyst in the energy industry, providing electricity market forecasting expertise, advice on risk management, while also trading an Open Cycle Gas Turbine power station. In 2008 Dr Wagner was appointed to an Australian Government panel of experts to advise on the design and implementation of the proposed emissions trading scheme.
