In developing the program and inviting speakers to this event, we research extensively with safety leaders from across the oil and gas industry about their challenges in taking their HSE and process safety management strategies to the next level. We then design an agenda in response to the specific challenges they face.

Jason Edwards
Faculty of Health, School – Psychology and Counselling

Dr Jason Edwards is a researcher with theat Queensland University of Technology's 'Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland' (CARRS-Q) . With an academic background is in Psychology, he conducted his PhD in Organisational Psychology and Safety. This PhD project consisted of a three year investigation of the culture of the Australian Heavy Vehicle Industry and the influence this culture has on safety. Dr Edwards has been involved in a number of other research projects both in Australia and in Oman, and has presented at domestic and international conferences. In addition to his research roles, Dr Edwards supervises PhD students and has served as a peer-reviewer on a number of well-respected scientific journals. Jason has a particular interest in applied research which results in real world application and change, and in communicating research findings to non-researchers. His research areas have included reviews of policing policy and practice, examination of heavy vehicle safety and safety culture, traffic safety culture and investigating effective practices for workplace health and safety inspectors.
Bruce Baldwin

Bruce joined Origin Energy in 2010 and has led the APLNG Upstream Emergency Management and Security team since 2011. In early 2015, the team’s scope grew to include Origin Energy’s onshore and offshore Upstream infrastructure in Australia and New Zealand. In 2009 he finished 20 years service with the Australian Army as a Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Officer Training Wing, and as Chief of Staff, at the Land Warfare Centre Canungra. His time in the military saw highlights of service in Africa and Middle East as well as various command positions within Armoured Units.
Bruce holds Masters Degrees in Emergency Management (CSU) and Defence Studies (UCAN) as well as Graduate Diploma’s in OHS (QUT) and Personnel Management. In 2005 he graduated from the Australian Command and Staff College, a tri-service, one year leadership development course.
Clive Killik

Clive is a Ph.D. chemical engineer from London University (UCL), a chartered engineer and fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineering. He has over thirty years’ process safety engineering and HSE consultancy experience in hydrocarbon gathering and processing facilities. Clive’s specialist consultancy areas include; process and personal safety, contractor HSE management, the preparation of HSE management systems, risk identification and assessment studies, the application of the ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) principle, the preparation of design HSE cases and peer reviews / audits. He is a technical auditor, and an experienced facilitator of hazard identification (HAZID) and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies.
Clive is currently a Principal HSE Consultant at Arrow Energy (a Shell / CNPC Joint venture) in Brisbane and an Adjunct Professor in chemical engineering at the University of Queensland. Previously he was the Shell Global Discipline Leader for contractor HSE and a Global Manager and Discipline Leader for HSE in projects. Clive is the author of the Shell contractor HSE management process, the project section of the Shell HSE control framework and the guidance document “HSE Assurance for Capital Projects” that is used as the template for determining the number and scope of HSE activities in a project. He is also the author and presenter of a number of HSE training courses within Shell and recently contributed to a course on risk management at Queensland University.
Jan Hayes

Dr Hayes has 30 years’ experience in safety and risk management. Her project experience covers a range of industries including offshore oil and gas, onshore petrochemicals, gas pipelines, mining, manufacturing and transportation (including air traffic control). She began her career in 1983 in oil and gas process plant operations, and then moved to detailed design. She was involved in the initial Australian oil industry response to the Piper Alpha incident in 1988 and has been working almost exclusively in industrial safety since then. Jan was a director and part owner of Qest Consulting Pty Ltd (one of Australia’s best known industrial risk and safety consultancies) between 1991 and 2004. Holding a number of operational roles, she managed up to 50 staff and was personally responsible for projects ranging from technical safety studies (such as safety cases, HAZOP studies, QRAs and reliability studies) to organisational psychology reviews and human factors studies.
Her current activities cover academia, consulting and regulation. She holds an Associate Professor appointment in the Centre for Construction Work Health and Safety Research at RMIT University where her research interests include operational decision making, safety in design, professionalism and the use of standards. She is Program Leader for the social science research activities of the Energy Pipelines Co-operative Research Centre. In addition, she consults part time with a small group of clients on safety performance improvement projects. Dr Hayes is a member of the Advisory Board of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority.
Dr Hayes holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Adelaide and a Master of Business from Swinburne University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the Australian National University.
