Scott Ainslie
President

Scott Ainslie brings over 30 years’ experience in an intelligence environment. During his career with the Australian Defence Force he served in combat and counter intelligence roles completing his service as a strategic analyst with the Defence Intelligence Organisation. On leaving the ADF Scott moved into business specialising in information security risk management which led to his increased engagement with intelligence and information technology. His close association with members of the Australian Intelligence Community, the Australian Federal Police and Attorney-General’s Department make him an excellent broker in the establishment of commercial relationships between the Federal Government, Defence and business communities. Scott joined AIPIO in 1995 and served on the Board as Registrar from 1997-1999. In 1999 and 2000 Scott was principal to a national series of AIPIO presentations on threat and risk management strategies to an audience comprising government, law enforcement and business sectors. Scott was appointed President in November 2011.


Luke Bencie

Luke has been a consultant to the US Department of State, US Department of Defense, several state/local government agencies, as well as Fortune 500 companies. He specializes in conducting threat and vulnerability assessments of critical infrastructure and is a recognized expert on limiting the spread of weapons/narcotics/human trafficking through airports, seaports and land border crossings. Mr. Bencie has worked in over 100 countries and has trained thousands of domestic and international students from Police to Military. Prior to establishing SMI, Mr. Bencie was a Senior Security Consultant for Raytheon Company in the Intelligence and Information Systems Division. In this capacity he supported U.S. Government clientele on national security issues, as well as performed business development in the emerging markets of India, Brazil, and Lebanon. Mr. Bencie previously served on the US Department of State's Foreign Emergency Support Team. In this capacity, he was responsible for immediately responding to terrorist attacks carried out against US targets overseas.

Mr. Bencie holds graduate degrees in National Security Studies from The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs and The American Military University, as well as an MBA from the University of Sarasota. He received his BA from Michigan State University and completed further course work from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Training Academy, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

Clare Birgin is the Director, Counter-Terrorism Middle East, South Asia and Africa in the International Security Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She works on the full range of issues related to Australia’s international counter-terrorism engagement with a current focus on the issue of foreign terrorist fighters.  She has a strong background in security issues and Eastern and Central Europe. She has served as Ambassador in Belgrade and Budapest, with previous postings in Washington, Geneva, Moscow and Warsaw.

Patrick holds extensive knowledge in the area of security operations and management which is complimented by his Bachelor in Accounting, and a Masters in Marketing. Under his stewardship Southern Cross Protection has been transformed from a significant loss making venture into a profitable, customer and service focused organisation.

Jason Brown is the National Security Director for Thales in Australia and New Zealand.  He is responsible for security liaison with government, law enforcement and intelligence communities to develop cooperative arrangements to minimise risk to Thales and those in the community that it supports.  He is also responsible to ensure compliance with international and Commonwealth requirements for national security and relevant federal and state laws.

Before joining Thales in 2004 Jason had 27 years experience in Commonwealth Government with appointments which include;

  • Assistant Secretary - Defence Imagery and the Geospatial Organisation
  • Director General - Safety, Compensation and People Development
  • Assistant Secretary - Defence Security
  • Various appointments in the Attorney General's Security portfolio in the areas of counter terrorism and security policy and investigations

Jason has a number of publications in the areas of client service, intelligence management and security.  He is internationally known speaker in the areas of intelligence, security, innovation, export control, scenario and strategic planning.  He is a Fellow of the British Security Institute and ARPI, a member of ASIS International, the National Gallery of Australia Foundation, the Risk Management Institution of Australasia and University House – Australian National University. He holds Security Professional Chartered status in the UK and Registered Professional status with SPR-A.  He was awarded the Australian Security Medal for Conspicuous Service in February 2011.  In 2013 IFSEC International recognised him in the top 40 influential persons in Security and Fire Management.

Jason has been involved in a range of non-security related public activities, including Chair of Lake Tuggeranong College Board, Vice President of the Burragate Rural Fire Brigade, supporter of the iLead mentoring program and donor support for the National Gallery of Australia Foundation, Victorian National Gallery and the National Parks of NSW.

For the past four years, he had two terms representing the APAC region on the Board of Advisors to the PCI Security Standards Council.


Matthew Curtis

Matthew is a Registered Security Professional and has advised national and corporate leaders for 15 years on security governance, management and risk. Prior to this he was a member of the Australian Diplomatic Corps for 20 years. He has worked and led in fields ranging through diplomacy, policy development and implementation, legal and litigation matters, industry regulation and negotiation. His consulting draws on high-level strategic and relationship management skills as well as effective policy and operational experience and has included:

  • National security – national counter-terrorism arrangements, critical infrastructure security, transport security and national security decision support
  • Jurisdiction-level emergency management governance arrangements and review
  • Security risk, governance, management, policy and planning

Matthew is Chair of the Australasian Council of Security Professionals, the peak representational body for the Security Profession. He was a member of Australia’s Diplomatic Corps for 20 years. He is a graduate of Chinese history, military politics and language and has worked, lived and travelled extensively throughout the Asia Pacific and Middle East.

He brings a unique body of knowledge to the increasingly ambiguous and concerning strategic security issues now emerging.


Stephen Dametto

Stephen is a Detective Superintendent in the Australian Federal Police (AFP). He formed and led the AFP’s Terrorism Financing Investigations Unit (TFIU). This is a multi-agency taskforce with a national and international remit that investigates terrorism financing, uses financial intelligence in terrorism investigations and provides training and capacity building to both public and private institutions all around the world.

He has been a member of the AFP since 1998. He has twice worked in the UK, for the Metropolitan Police Service in their Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) as a member of their Senior Management Team and in the National Crime Squad’s Money Laundering Investigations Team.

Stephen is a Chartered Accountant and prior to joining the AFP worked in that capacity for three years. He is a qualified lawyer and holds a Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (Policing and Emergency Services) and an Executive Diploma in Management with the Chartered Management Institute in the UK.

Pablo began his career with Johnson & Johnson in 2001 as Information Management Director for Medical Devices and Diagnostics Europe and in 2003 he joined the Networking and Computing Services division’s Global Strategy Programs group and moved to Asia Pacific.

In Pablo’s 24 year career in IT, he has gained extensive experience in various IT disciplines including 9 years as Director IT Operations, has worked in Europe as part of the EU Privacy and Data Protection Team and in the Americas for organizations like PeopleSoft, Société Générale de Surveillance and FCC.  A truly global executive, Pablo has a MS Industrial Engineering  from Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, an MBA from University of Southern California and several security, project management and technical certifications.

Pablo has a strong passion for people development, inclusion, and diversity. He has been a member of HOLA! (Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Achievement) since its inception in 2001 where he has worked on various initiatives, including mentoring and community services. Her career began in the Australian Defence Force as an Army Officer. After more than 10 years in the Army, Kate left to commence a career as a management consultant. As a licensed security consultant, she provides security, risk and threat assessment advice into the transport, mining, Defence, aviation and construction sectors. She has extensive experience in the planning and delivery of complex security infrastructure projects for public and private sector clients. She has been the Project Director for the delivery of over $1B of Queensland Government high security projects and Commonwealth buildings and infrastructure security and Defence projects.

Honoured by ISC2 as the Senior IT Security Professional for 2009, Ajoy has over 20 years experience in ICT security. After graduating as a Computer Engineer, he spent a number of years in various capacities in law enforcement, banking and consultancy. In 2012, Ajoy joined the NSW Public Service where is General Manager, Security & Risk for Transport for NSW.

Ajoy specialises in information security, computer forensics, litigation support and IT security governance. He has led some of Australia’s largest ediscovery projects, has been the expert witness in some of Australia’s most politically sensitive corporate investigations and is routinely instructed by barristers and solicitors to provide expert opinion in complex criminal cases including online child sex exploitation, organised criminal networks, sex crimes, people smuggling, homicide, drugs, fraud, corruption and terrorism. He also provides opinion on technical surveillance measures and countermeasures, including interception.

Ajoy is the chair of the NSW Government’s IT Security Community of Practice and advises a number of other industry and government committees on information and protective security. He also lectures in cybercrime, security and privacy law and computer evidence to post-graduate law and police studies students.

Ajoy is the author of Standard Australia’s Handbook 171 Guidelines on the Management of IT Evidence and co-author of Handbook 231 Information Security Risk Management Guidelines. He currently leads the Australian effort on ISO 27037: Acquisition of Digital Evidence and has prepared its Australian Annex

Ajoy is an accredited assessor, under Defence Signals Directorate’s Infosec Registered Assessor Program (IRAP) and a Certified Information Security Systems Practitioner (CISSP). He is an Australian Computer Society Certified Professional (ACS-CP), a scheme recognised under the Professional Services Act and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ajoy has a philanthropic interest in organisations focused on educating parents and teachers about cyber-bullying and NGOs combating the sexual exploitation and the intentional mutilation of children.


Andrew Gustke

Andrew joined the Victoria Police in January 1983 and performed general duties in and around Melbourne until 1988 when he was successful in becoming a Detective. In 1991 he was selected to work on the Zenith Task Force which was a protracted murder investigation into the abduction, rape and murder of a 6 year old girl.  Andrew played an important part in the prosecution and conviction of a man who received life imprisonment never to be released for this murder.

In 1993 he transferred to the Victoria Police Homicide Squad where he investigated murders, fatal police shootings and deaths in custody.  In 1996 Andrew transferred to the Major Fraud Group and was the team leader in a complex and protracted Fraud Investigation which eventually led him to give evidence in Frankfurt Germany.

In 2004 he was awarded the Tynan / Eyre Memorial Scholarship.  Andrew was studying covert electronic evidence gathering techniques. This took Andrew to New York, the FBI, NYPD and the DEA. Then to Washington D.C. to the FBI research facility in Quantico, Virginia, RCMP in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Andrew returned to the Crime Command in 2007. In 2009 in was selected to be the Victoria Police Senior Investigating Officer for Operation Neath which successfully prevented a Terrorist Attack in Sydney at the Holsworthy Army Base. He was on assignment to the Joint Counter Terrorism Team until July 2011.  He was awarded the Australian Federal Police Operational Medal for his leadership during Operation Neath. He is currently Detective Inspector at the Victoria Police, Crime Command and the Victoria Police Representative for the Counter Terrorism investigation capability.  He is considered an expert in his field on counter terrorism in Australia and presents at the Senior Investigating Officers course held around Australia.  He has also presented on several occasions overseas to international law enforcement agencies and to the National Security College in Canberra. He is currently the Officer in charge of the Purana Task Force which is responsible for the investigation of Serious and Organized Crime and Corruption within Sport and Prisons.


Anthony Hall

Detective Superintendent Anthony Hall joined the Australian Federal Police in 1994 as part of the AFP Undergraduate Program, commencing his career in Sydney. Initially he performed general investigations duties attached to the Fraud and General Crime and Counterfeit Currency Divisions of the Sydney Office.

In 1996, Anthony transferred to the AFP Melbourne Office and performed various investigations roles in areas of transnational organised crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, organised fraud, security matters and a twelve month period in the role of Project Officer to the General Manager Southern Operations.

In 2003, Anthony transferred to Queensland and performed various roles in AFP Brisbane and Gold Coast Offices and in 2005 he was promoted to Detective Sergeant, responsible for the leadership, development and support of operational intelligence teams nationally.

In 2006, Anthony returned the AFP Melbourne Office where he led investigations teams in Border and International Operations and was responsible for the development of the AFP Hazardous Chemical Investigations capability.

In 2009, Anthony transferred to the AFP Counter Terrorism Unit and performed a leadership role in the investigation of terrorism offences conducted as part of the Joint Counter Terrorism Team Melbourne Office.  In this role, he worked in partnership with State and Territory Police and Intelligence agencies nationally. 

In 2010, Anthony was posted to the AFP Suva Office as the Liaison Officer.   During his tenure in Fiji, he also performed the role of Pacific Transnational Crime Unit Advisor and as Senior Liaison Officer, his leadership and management of the AFP footprint in 14 countries necessitated him managing a broad range of operational, political, strategic and representational issues and developing relationships.  

In April 2014, Anthony was promoted to Detective Superintendent and returned to Australia to perform the role of National Coordinator Serious and Organised Crime based in Canberra.  In this role he is responsible for the management and coordination of protracted criminal investigations focussing on organised crime, large scale drug importations, firearms and serious corruption.  This role also involves the national coordination of the Joint Waterfront Taskforces and managing national projects for capacity development and change implementation.

Anthony is married to Trudi and together they have two children.  Outside work, Anthony enjoys spending time with his family and socialising with friends.  His interests include exercising, watching AFL football, cricket and thoroughbred horse racing and playing golf.


Sean Haran

Sean has over 30 years' experience in law enforcement, corporate security, risk management, training, international air express and logistics.Sean started his career with the West Australia Police before moving to Sydney where he was involved in a number of consultancies providing High Risk Training programs to both commercial and government clients.

During this time, Sean’s company was responsible for the planning and delivering of the Protective Security Operation for 2 Olympic and 2 Commonwealth Games Welcome Home Parades. Sean entered the Air Express industry in 2000 and subsequently spent the next 10 years at DHL with responsibility for security in the Oceania region.

He was responsible for Policy development, Risk Management, Security and Investigations for over 30 facilities and approximately 2000 staff within Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji and the Pacific Islands. He was a member of a number of key Industry/Government committees on Aviation and Cargo security and has appeared before Parliamentary Committees reviewing Aviation security in Australia. He was also the past Chairman of the Security Sub Committee for the Conference of Asia Pacific Express Carriers (CAPEC). A committed Security professional, Sean has a background in Counter Terrorism and Tactical Training, being a member of the West Australia Police Force Special Weapons Emergency Squad and Tactical response Group.

More recently Sean has provided National security Consulting for DB Schenker, and Chubb Security Services (Cash in Transit). Currently Sean is the National Security Manager for StarTrack and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team for Australia Post Group Security.

He is married with two beautiful girls and resides in Sydney.


Richard Johnson

Richard has fourteen years experience at the Westpac Group.  Prior to his appointment as Chief Information Security Officer, Richard was the Head of Technical Security Services for the Group.  In these roles, he has led the Group’s information security strategy, delivery and governance.

Prior to joining the Westpac Group, Richard held roles as Head of Technology Audit at Woolworths Limited, Technology Audit Manager at BT Financial Group, and in Computer Risk Management at Arthur Andersen.

In addition to his academic credentials, Richard has a number of professional security qualifications including CISA, CISM, CISSP, CRISC, SCF, and ACP.


Dr. Clarke Jones

Australian National University

Dr Clarke Jones worked for the Australian Government for over 15 years in national security in the fields of military, police and intelligence. Since moving to academia in 2010, he has been working as a researcher and visiting fellow in the Regulatory Institutions Network at the Australian National University. His research interests include counter-terrorism, radicalisation, de-radicalisation and the rehabilitation of terrorist offenders. Dr Jones currently advises the Philippine Government on terrorist inmate and prison gang management in their correctional system. He is a regular commentator on terrorism and national security issues on both international and domestic media channels and is widely published in the areas of prison gangs, radicalisation, terrorist rehabilitation and intervention. He holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales and a Masters degree by research in criminology from RMIT University.    


Darren Kane

Darren Kane is the recently appointed Chief Security Officer of NBNCo Limited.  He provides both strategic and operational security advice across one of Australia’s biggest infrastructure projects.  At NBN Co, the goal is to deliver Australia's first national wholesale-only, open access broadband network.

Previous to this recent move to NBNCo,  Darren served 13 years with the Australian Federal Police and then joined ASIC in 1998, as Assistant Director of National Enforcement. Darren moved to Telstra in 2004 and held the positions of Group Manager of Regulatory and Agency Liaison and General Manager of Security Operations, before becoming Director, Corporate Security & Investigations in 2009.  Darren held the latter role for approximately four and half years.  Darren was also Telstra's inaugural Officer of Internet Trust & Safety responsible for coordinating cyber-safety for all Telstra's products and services.


Ian McKenzie

Ian McKenzie’s Australian Public Service career spanned some 30 years in the Department of Defence, primarily in intelligence and security.

For the decade until end 2013, he was the head of two different intelligence agencies –  first the Defence Imagery and Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (2003 to 2007), and then the Defence Signals Directorate  (2007 to 2013).

Most of his career was spent in DSD, where he began as an analyst in 1984. DSD is the foreign signals intelligence agency and information security authority for the Australian government. As such it is both an intelligence agency and security agency, and performs a unique role for the Australian government.

During his tenure as Director of DSD, cyber security became a major issue for the Australian government, and DSD provided vital security advice and assistance to government agencies during the past seven years. DSD established and hosted the Commonwealth Cyber Security Operations Centre in 2010.

His other career highlights have included:

  • Posted to Washington D.C. as a liaison officer
  • Responsible for DSD investment program and capability development during a period of significant investment
  • Chief Executive Assistant to Secretary of Defence  (1995-1996)
  • Responsible for rationalization and market testing of all Defence corporate functions in Canberra

He is from Adelaide. He has a BA (Honours) from the University of Adelaide, majoring in History and Chinese. In the early 1980’s prior to joining Defence he worked as a schoolteacher in Melbourne and also studied in China for a year under a Commonwealth Government scholarship. Mr McKenzie was awarded a Public Service Medal in the 2014 Australia Day Honours List for his significant contribution to enhancing Australia’s defence and national intelligence capabilities.


Jock O'Hagan

Jock O’Hagan is the Group Risk and Security Manager at Asciano one of Australia’s leading Transport and Logistics company’s. He has been with Asciano 9 months and in this role he is responsible for oversight of risk management and security requirements across a diverse group of operations ranging including rail, road and ports. He has been operating in this space for over 12 years and has been directly working in Stevedoring for the previous 15 years, during which he has been closely involved with Government and other Industry players in the development and implementation of security initiatives in the maritime environment; he is a former Chairman of the Transport Sector IAAG within TISN.

Prior to joining Asciano, Jock enjoyed a 24 year career in the Royal Australian Navy, mainly spent on Patrol Boats. In 2000 he left the Navy and joined then P&O Ports in a front line Operations Supervisor role at P&O’s Port Botany Terminal. He then moved to a role in Safety and Environment Management at that site where he was also responsible for implementing the physical security arrangements at Terminal level. In December of 2004 he took on the challenge of National Manager Security of P&O (now DP World) addressing the security challenges being posed post ISPS/MTOFSA.


Mark Porter

Mark Porter joined the New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF) in 1987.  In 1990, Mark began his career in criminal investigation and, in 1995, he completed the Detectives Education Program.

In 1997, Mark transferred to Legal Services where he provided legal support to major criminal investigations, particularly with regard to electronic surveillance and controlled operations applications.  During this time, Mark completed a Diploma in Law and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.  In 2002, Mark was admitted as a solicitor in NSW.

In 2003, Mark undertook a secondment as a Senior Investigator (Detective Sergeant) with the Australian Crime Commission, earning a commendation for his role as the officer-in-charge of Operation ‘Pewsey’, an investigation into the large scale manufacture and trafficking of illicit firearms. 

In 2005, Mark transferred to the NSWPF Counter Terrorism Command as an investigative Team Leader.  In 2006, Mark was promoted into the role of Investigations Manager at the rank of Detective Inspector. 

During his time at counter terrorism, Mark has been involved and commended for his role in a number of significant counter terrorism related investigations including Operation Pendennis-Eden (terrorist cells in Sydney and Melbourne); Strike Force Ridgecrop (theft and sale of military rocket launchers); and Operation Neath (planned terrorist attack on Holsworthy Army Base, Sydney).

In October 2012, Mark took up a position as the commander of a specialist unit within the NSWPF Counter Terrorism Command.


Duncan Price

Duncan started his professional career as an Infantry Officer in the Australian Regular Army. After nine years' service he moved to the United Kingdom to work in the Security, Facilities Management and Event Industry. Returning to Australia in 2011, Duncan is now the Principal Security Advisor to QGC - A BG Group Business. He has overseen the transition of security arrangements for both the Upstream and Midstream Assets from a project construction phase to operations. His remit includes threat assessment, security in design, hardware and systems, information security, guarding operations, maritime security and crisis management. Duncan is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College Duntroon. His I currently studying for a Master's Degree in Risk Management.

Gavriel has had over fifteen years of risk management, safety advisory, operational close protection, specialist security experience, and high level consulting. During this time he provided protection at all levels (CPO, Planning Officer and team Leader) to politicians, celebrities and high profile business persons. He specialises in security related risk management, Close Personal Protection (CPP) and Defensive Tactics (DT). He has worked and/or trained on five continents and presented training to Presidential protection units, Special Forces, operational CPOs, Law-enforcement personnel, reaction teams and various other security operators. He has also presented hundreds of training interventions for corporate clients and other civilians groups and individuals. In addition to the security and safety sector, His experience extends to working with players in the Resources, Governmental, Aid, Financial and METS sectors.

Gavriel was the first recipient of both his Doctorate (Criminology) and Master’s degree (Security Risk Management) from UNISA (the first in Africa). The Masters was awarded to him based on a three year research project that explored how to professionalise the Close Protection Industry in South Africa. The Doctoral award was based on a further four year research project into the South African and Australian security industries with the focus on Use of force and best practice Defensive Tactics Training. He also holds a Bachelor degree in Business Administration (WDETC) and a Graduate Diploma in Marketing and Management (IMM).  He is also an ASIS CPP and has a Diploma in Security and Risk Management from the Australian Security Academy.

Gavriel is the Author of ‘Beyond the Bodyguard: a guide to protective practices success’. He has been interviewed as a subject matter expert by media organisations such as the ABC, CNBC and the Associated Press as well as being featured in prominent security journals. He is a fellow and member of the board of governors of the South African Institute of Security (SAIS) as well as a member of ASIS, and a previous member and fellow of the United Kingdom and Indian Security Institutes. Lastly, he served as a Co-Chairman of the Close Protection Association of South Africa (CPASA). He is also an acknowledged speaker and has presented lectures and workshops at many events and conferences in several countries.

Gavriel is an inducted member of the South African Martial Arts Hall of Fame, he is featured in the Israeli Museum of Martial Arts History. He was a member of the South African full contact Taekwondo team as well as a former black belt middleweight full contact champion in the DSJJ world full contact championships. Gavriel currently holds two 6th Dan’s, and a 2nd Dan in different martial arts.

Glenn Thomson is a Senior Project Manager in Thales Australia's Secure Communications and Information Systems business.  He has over 20 years experience in systems engineering and project management of military command, control and communication systems.  Over recent years he has successfully delivered a number of significant Information Technology (IT) projects for Government customers, including the Event Management System used for Australia’s G20 meetings from December 2013 through to the Leaders’ Summit in November 2014.

Tim Wellsmore has 20 years experience in law enforcement, scientific and technical intelligence collection roles in Australia. Tim is the Manager of the Australian Crime Commission’s Fusion Special Intelligence (Cyber) team, which is integrated in the Australian Cyber Security Centre. The FSI (Cyber) team’s role in the centre is to discover, understand and prioritise the cybercrime threat against Australia, and to use this information and partnerships to enhance government responses to it.  Tim has been with the Crime Commission since 2003, and has published doctoral research studies in the field of network communications, cryptography and security. He holds a Masters In Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science with honours, and other related qualifications and training.
